DOES A HIGHER PRICE TAG MEAN BETTER CLOTHES?
Luxury likes to sell a quiet promise: pay more, get more. Better fabric. A garment that lasts. New research says that promise does not hold.
A study from the University of Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC) and WRAP, covered by RTE Do high price tags really mean a better quality t-shirt or coat?, tested 47 t-shirts from luxury to budget. After 50 wash-and-tumble cycles, the most expensive tee, priced at £395, ranked 28th for durability. A £4 supermarket tee outperformed it. Six of the ten best performers cost under £15. Four of those top ten were 100% cotton.
Durability comes from design, materials, and manufacturing, not the label. For a Canadian Streetwear Brand | Kuwalla Tee whose name is pronounced QUALITY, that is not a talking point we borrowed this week. It is the brief we have been working from since 2012.
Smart luxury is the other side of that finding. Not a logo tax. Clothes you can name the fabric of, wear on a Tuesday, and still want in March.
WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR INSTEAD OF THE PRICE TAG?
Fabric you can name. Heavier cotton and better construction held up better in the study than a luxury label on a fragile knit. That is the logic behind the Oversized Heavy Tee NAVY | KUWALLA-TEE (CAD 65): 100% cotton jersey, heavyweight, oversized boxy fit, vintage pigment-dyed finish. A daily base, not a souvenir.
A blend with a reason. Some of the most durable shirts used mixed fibres on purpose: synthetics for shrinkage, wool and cotton for feel. The Monogram Knit Crew BLACK | KUWALLA-TEE (CAD 95) is 8% wool, 48% recycled polyester, 29% polyester, 12% cotton, and 3% spandex, with ribbed cuffs and a signature monogram. Pair it with the Monogram Knit Sweats BLACK | KUWALLA-TEE (CAD 110) if you want a set that looks finished and still wears like clothes you live in. Both are in the live FALL / WINTER 26 collection.
A silhouette you will still like. The researchers also talk about emotional durability: a garment lasts longer when you still want it. Straight-leg sweats, a simple crew, a hoodie you actually leave the house in. The Family Hoodie HEATHER GREY | KUWALLA TEE (CAD 120) is 100% cotton, relaxed, with “Family Affair” lettering. Timeless is the piece you keep reaching for.
HOW DO YOU BUY CLOTHES THAT LAST?
Start with two or three pieces you will rotate, not ten you will forget. One knit you wear on repeat. Bottoms that already fit your life, like the Faded Straight Leg Sweatpant FADED BLACK | KUWALLA TEE (CAD 125). One jacket that works over a tee or a crew. Wash cold, skip the high-heat dry, hang knits. Cotton shrank more with heat in the LITAC test. Durability is also how you treat the piece after you buy it.
The FW26 LOOKBOOK shows the season as a wardrobe, not a trophy case. Shop New Arrivals when you are ready. Smart luxury is not a slogan we borrowed this week. It is how KUWALLA-TEE is pronounced.
